A piece from this afternoon visit.
AS some one who grew up with lectures in typography, lecturers that forced us to redraw fonts by hand from our expensive Letraset catalogues, I was shocked speaking to a newly qualified graphic designer – she had never learn to draw fonts, design fonts and their knowledge base never ventures beyond their current computer system.
The hugely exciting fonts from the 1960s and 1970s, were part of my early education., she had never heard of.
For many of the designers  I chat to now think typography started with David Carson and Neville Brody, with their deconstructed typography which I never bought into. Herb Lubalin, was for me, one of the golden standards.
